Site Map

Directions: From Clearwater Junction turn north on Highway 83 and travel approximately 24 miles to the sign for Lake Inez.  Go about one-quarter mile past the north end of the lake to find the road that leads down to the primitive campground and boat launch.

Latitude-Longitude:  47.16.980 / -113.34.005

Elevation: 4,058 ft.

Lake size: 288 acres

Land ownership: National forest and private.

Facilities: Small boat launch and outhouse.

Boating regs: Standard boating regulations for the state of Montana.

How to launch: Launch from the ramp at the north end of the lake.

Description of paddle: There are numerous private cabins along the shore of Lake Inez, so consider most of the shoreline off limits for recreation or non-emergency landings  A circumnavigation of this lake is about 3.5 miles.  At the north end of the lake, just across from the boat launch, is a backwater that ends at the inlet for the Clearwater River.  During high water, it is not advisable, if even possible, to paddle back here; however, later in summer and fall it is worth the short side trip.

Potential issues: During summer, moderate to strong winds generally come up in the afternoon, and that can make the trip across the lake challenging and potentially dangerous.  Also, summer thunderstorms can bring not only lightening but strong winds on the leading edge of the front. In July and August powerboats ply the lake from about 10 in the morning until dusk, potentially creating rough water conditions.
